Safety Tips For Young People

User Tips & Feedback    Content & Privacy Statements

The Internet is a great place to chat with people from all over the world and make new friends, to learn about nearly every subject possible, and to have a lot of fun. The "Little Engine" will be happy to take you anywhere you want to go on the Net, however do take care; you could be at risk if you don't follow a few simple steps.
  • Always keep your personal information (name, address, phone number) private. It's like giving out the keys to your house!

  • Your personal password is your own special identity, so keep it secret, and don't share it - even with your best friend or someone who sounds official.

  • Making new e-pals online is cool, but tell your parents about who you've met, and introduce them to your new friends.

  • If you want to meet someone you've met in cyberspace, ask your parents permission, and then go only when they can be present.

  • There's really great stuff on the Net, but there's some pretty bad stuff too! Always tell a parent or a teacher if you come across anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

  • Chat can be fun, but don't hang around in a chat room if someone makes you feel uncomfortable or worried. Remember, YOU are in charge of your experiences on the Internet!
Follow these simple steps, and you will have access to the world. Enjoy your experience, and remember when surfing the Internet, your best friends really can be your parents or your teachers.

These tips are the result of extensive research, and are the product of a report produced by Childnet International and Fleishman Hillard as part of an EC funded research study. Our sincere thanks to the kind folks at Childnet International for their permission to reproduce them.
